Principal’s Message

As the proud principal of Orangeview Junior High School, I am excited to welcome all of our Panthers to the 2023-24 school year. We are delighted to have you and your student join our school community, where we strive to create a nurturing and supportive environment for all students.

We believe that every student deserves a positive and inclusive learning experience. We are committed to fostering an atmosphere where students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Our dedicated team of teachers and staff work tirelessly to ensure that each student receives the individualized attention and guidance they need to reach their full potential.

We understand that the transition to junior high can be both exciting and challenging for students and families alike. Rest assured that we are here to support you every step of the way. Our school offers a range of resources and programs designed to support our community. From academic support and a robust junior high athletic program to counseling services and parent involvement opportunities, we strive to create a well-rounded educational experience for your student.

Orangeview will challenge our students both academically and socially through UNLIMITED opportunities on campus. We offer a variety of honors and advanced programs such as AVID and are proud to have been the first junior high school PUENTE program in Southern California. Our intramural sports teams are competitive and award winning. Because of our Panthers tenacity in Civic Education, Orangeview was awarded the Civic Learning Award of Merit, as well as awarded the prestigious 2020 California Democracy School distinction. Our focus is to foster students to be Life Ready!

When our students finish their two years here at Orangeview, our amazing staff is committed to ensuring that students have been equipped with the skills associated with the 5 Cs and CPSF. Students are expected to demonstrate and practice these skills by Collaborating and Communicating during instruction, Critical Thinking and being Creative, as well as promoting Character and Compassion both on and off campus.

We strongly believe in the power of collaboration between parents, students, and educators. We encourage you to be actively involved in your child’s education and to maintain open lines of communication with us. We are fortunate to be a Community School for the 2nd year and look forward to providing a greater role of supporting our community and students through this grant.

With warm regards and PRIDE,

Bindi Crawford

December Revised Plan

VAPING UPDATE FROM THE ORANGE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (OCDE)
AUHSD and OCDE is committed to preventing substance use among youth, including the vaping of nicotine and cannabis products. In light of recent news coverage, many students, parents, and educators are justifiably concerned about vaping and its health effects. Here is what we know so far.

Situation: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and state and local health departments including the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating 450 cases of respiratory illness associated with vaping. CDPH has provided guidelines for physicians to identify and report cases of Vaping-Associated Pulmonary Injury (VAPI).

Research: The relative recency of e-cigarettes requires a degree of uncertainty about the long-term health effects of vaping. However, there is an increasing body of research about the toxic compounds contained within the devices and the aerosols they generate, including heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Counterfeit and grey-market products, particularly for cannabis, are a major concern due to contamination with pesticides and unapproved additives. Although the risk of adulterants is arguably higher for illicit products, it is important to emphasize that there is no single manufacturer or seller, substance or device, licit or illicit, associated with VAPI at this time.
Regulation: Vaping devices and liquids are not currently subject to review and approval processes by the FDA. Although these processes were previously delayed until 2021, the FDA announced on September 11 that they will be implemented in the near future. This will result in the removal of all non-tobacco-flavored e-cigarette products from the market. These rules will not apply to cannabis vaping products, which in California are already subject to regulation under the Bureau of Cannabis Control.

Public Health Recommendations: Per the CDC, "E-cigarette products should not be used by youth, young adults, pregnant women, as well as adults who do not currently use tobacco products. Adult smokers who are attempting to quit should use evidence-based treatments, including counseling and FDA-approved medications."

Prevention Services: OCDE provides no-cost youth vaping prevention workshops for parents and/or staff at public schools, districts, and charter schools located in Orange County. These workshops review different types of nicotine-based and cannabis-based vaping devices, the key health risks for youth according to research, strategies for engaging youth in prevention, and resources for prevention and cessation. Form more information contact Stephan Lambert, OCDE, at slambert@ocde.us  (714) 966.4412
